What is the Natal Mahogany?
The Trichilia dregeana, or Natal Mahogany is native to the tropical regions of Africa but can be found in many offices and atriums here in Chicago! The Natal Mahogany is often confused for a type of Ficus because of its leaf shape, but there are enough differences to set this plant apart!
The Natal Mahogany tree leaves are large, dark green, and feather-shaped on this dense plant. It’s perfect for executive offices, conference rooms, or anywhere that can fit this gorgeous tree. How long does a Natal Mahogany tree take to grow? In short, it depends on the environment but tends to grow faster than some houseplants similar in size.
Natal Mahogany Care Needs
This plant enjoys bright light but does not do well when in direct sunlight as that could scorch the leaves but can become leggy if it’s not in enough sunlight. Cutting back the leggy growth will help promote dense, new growth. The Natal Mahogany should then be moved to a space with more light, even if it’s artificial light.

If you are into the tree look, the Schefflera Amate is a gorgeous tree that is like the Natal Mahogany in looks and care. Perhaps you want a tree but want one in a bright window. In this case we would recommend the Ficus bejamina! This plant can tolerate being in direct sunlight more than the Natal Mahogany.
